Alphonse Mucha Exhibition in Lyon

This landmark exhibition brings together more than 90 original works from Czech painter and illustrator Alphonse Mucha — posters, decorative panels, paintings, and textiles spanning his Paris fame to his politically charged homeland years — staged across 6 exhibition sections inside Lyon's Grand Hôtel-Dieu. Instantly recognizable for his flowing lines, ornamental floral frames, and elegant women wreathed in flowers, Mucha's decorative style didn't just illustrate an era — it defined it: Art Nouveau.

The exhibition

The Seasons lithographs on display 90+ Original Works

This isn't a touring reproduction show. Every piece on display — from the iconic Sarah Bernhardt posters to rarely-seen decorative panels and paintings. It's a full career retrospective, tracing Mucha from the poster that defined an era to the more personal, politically engaged work he made after returning to his homeland.

Immersive projection room Art Comes to Life

The exhibition closes with something no other Mucha show currently offers: a room where light and projection are layered directly onto his work, turning his flowing lines and ornamental figures into a living, moving environment. It's the moment that turns a gallery visit into an experience.

Mucha posters and photographs in the gallery The Look That Defined an Era

Even if the name is unfamiliar, the style isn't: flowing hair and drapery, women framed in halos of flowers, and posters that feel more like stained glass than advertising. Mucha didn't just work in this style — his 1894 poster for Sarah Bernhardt created it, and it went on to define Art Nouveau across Europe.

About the Artist

Alphonse Mucha: The architect of modern beauty

Born in 1860, Czech artist Alphonse Mucha conquered Paris before leaving his stylistic imprint on the world. As a multi-disciplinary master, he dissolved the boundaries between fine art and everyday design, transforming advertising posters and theatrical scenery into timeless masterpieces.

His work celebrates a perfect harmony—fluid lines embracing elegant female figures, beautifully framed by floral and neoclassical motifs. Yet behind this grace lies a deeply humanistic painter, dedicated to celebrating his homeland's identity and the unity of nations.
